Young Man Charged with Cyberbullying Convicted to Jail

By Lisa ShawMay 21, 2012

I just read that former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi today was sentenced to 30 days in jail by a New Jersey judge for spying on his roommate during an intimate moment. Ravi’s freshman roommate Tyler Clementi committed suicide days later. The prosecution, which sought a significant prison term, indicated it will appeal the judge’s sentence.

I actually was kind of surprised that the sentencing was that light. The world is certainly watching this case, because it has become a poster child for the dangers and consequences of cyberbullying. Apparently, Ravi did not appear to be remorseful, at least to the judge who made this observation:

“I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi,” Judge Glenn Berman told the court. “He had no reason to, but I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity. I heard this jury say, ‘guilty’ 288 times — 24 questions, 12 jurors. That’s the multiplication,” Berman said. “I haven’t heard you apologize once.”

As a mother, I can feel the pain of both sets of parents. A big lesson here is that we need to teach our kids the difference between right and wrong and what is a joke and what is cruel. The Internet increases everyone’s footprint and consequences are real and sometimes cannot be made right.

Wow! What a weak sentence for such a grievous crime!

  2. Eligibility is a huge worry for some. The Student Loan Forgiveness Act’s settlement and forgiveness plan only applies to federal student loans. The Student Loan Ranger continually distinguishes between federal and private loans and gives information on ease for federal loans that is already available.

    • Student loans can be confusing, with many unique types and and servicers. Consolidation exemplifies this perplexity. There are many methods, but only one retains federal protections like income-driven repayment plans, deferments and forbearances, and forgiveness.
If you are consolidating federal student loans, consolidate into a Federal Consolidation Loan. These would be eligible for the Student Loan Forgiveness Act’s 10/10 plan and upgrades to Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and the interest rate cap would apply to new loans after the act is voted for. They also are eligible for the existing protections mentioned above.

Keep in mind, however, that consolidating loans may reset any progress you’ve made regarding relief like Public Service Loan Forgiveness. If you consolidate federal loans through a private service, they are not eligible for relief under the Student Loan Forgiveness Act, or for any at present available relief.
A common point of bewilderment: Just because you make payments to lenders like Sallie Mae doesn’t mean you don’t have a federal loan. Log into the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to see if you currently have a federal loan; it’s worth knowing if you can access some relief!

If you’re repaying student loans and want to simplify the course of action by making a single check every month, we’re happy to help. Likewise, if you’ve fallen on financial hardship, Student Loan Consolidation can help you weather your circumstances by lowering monthly payments and avoiding a default. If you’re already in default, we can help with that, too.

Our Consolidation team are experts in providing the appropriate documentation needed to be submitted to the right channels. We have streamed lined the method and make it very simple. There are a number of programs available and will qualify you for the best one. Please contact us to see which Student Loan Debt Releif plan is best for you.
