3 Parenting Mistakes Every Parent Should Know And Avoid

By Will PriceSeptember 5, 2012

There are no perfect parents. In fact, every parent will make mistakes raising their children. Parents can, however, educate themselves on how to effectively raise their children. Here are 3 parenting mistakes that every parent should know and avoid.

Neglecting

Many parents have a fast-paced, super busy schedule, and have very little energy left at the end of the day to meet the needs of their children. As a result, many parents neglect their children because they’re too busy and/or tired.

Neglecting a child can be one of the biggest mistakes a parent can make. A neglected child can learn to be comfortable with isolation, and lose social interest. A child in isolation with little or no social interest can grow up to be selfish and disinterested with the well-being of others.

Comparing

Sibling rivalry can be draining for parents, and destructive to relationships. Many parents are left wondering why their children fight and fuss all the time. The problem could be the parents.

One of the leading causes of sibling rivalry is comparing children to each other. Parents who make this mistake stir up jealousy among children, which leads to sibling rivalry. Jealousy is only the tip of the iceberg, though; comparing could also result in a lack of self-confidence in one of the children.

Over-protecting

Parents who make the mistake of over-protecting their children prevent them from learning basic problem-solving skills necessary for them to explore and navigate through life. While there is value in protecting children, over-protecting them devalues their potential to be self-sufficient human beings.

This is not an exhaustive list of mistakes that parents could make, but if parents commit to avoiding these three mistakes they will be well on their way to raising healthy and happy children.
